Modern Foreign Languages

The MFL and Community Language department offers every student in KS3 the opportunity to study a language from a choice of Urdu, French, Spanish or German. In the first half-term of Year 7, students follow an induction programme where they sample the languages on offer before they decide which they will choose to study in KS3.

At KS4 students can choose to study their KS3 language to GCSE level and in the Sixth Form, all students who study for the IB Diploma take a language. Students can continue with their GCSE language or take a different language from beginners' level.

The study of a foreign language at GDIS allows the students to develop their listening, reading, writing and speaking skills through a variety of teaching and learning methods. The emphasis is on enjoyment and learning. The department is well equipped, with an interactive whiteboard and computers in all classrooms. The department has specially designed language software to help students to use the computers to learn independently.

We also provide regular trips to the cinema to see foreign films and encourage links with local businesses, such as the Novatel Birmingham. These community links give students the opportunity to experience the use of languages in the workplace, offering a range of work experience.
